About Us

The work of the gospel transcends race and ethnicity (Ephesians 2.11–22), and we are grateful that God has brought people from many nations to be part of First Baptist Church. The single cord that unites us is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and a commitment to the Word of God. To these the church has been faithful for over 250 years.

Our Activities
Our Worship Service takes place on Sunday mornings at 11 A.M. In addition, we offer Bible study classes for adults and children on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30 A.M. From September to May: the Women's Fellowship takes place quarterly on the third Saturday of the month, and the Worship Choir rehearses from 7:00-8:30 P.M. on Wednesday nights.

The church office is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and Wednesday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

A Brief History
The First Baptist Church in the City of New York relocated to 79th and Broadway in 1891. This fourth church building stands near the site where its first Pastor, John Gano, escaped an ambush as he left the city to join General Washington as a chaplain. The church’s original building was on Gold Street, and was desecrated by the British during the Revolution. A second building was later built on Broom Street. It later moved to Park Avenue and 39th Street.
In 1891 the current church building was erected by architect George M. Keister, who applied a Biblically related symbolism to the edifice. In the last few years the church has been engaged in a number of renovation projects. A new roof was completed a few years ago and major interior renovations have been made.
Two of its pastors have served as chaplains of the U.S. Congress.  One was a founder of Brown University.  Altogether its 18 pastors have written over 300 books.

Affiliation
Since 1946, the church has been associated with the
General Association of Regular Baptist Churches.  Founded in 1932, the GARBC is a voluntary partnership of churches with a fourfold mission to champion Biblical truth, to impact the world for Christ, to perpetuate a Baptist heritage, and to advance the Association churches.

We Are...
A BIBLE-BELIEVING CHURCH: Since its beginnings in 1745, the church has stood on the Word of God as its final authority. All of its pastors have proclaimed the good news of the Gospel without apology or compromise.

A MISSION-MINDED CHURCH: It has been the privilege of our church to send missionaries to many countries of the world through independent faith missionary agencies. Presently, we support twelve missionary families.

AN INDEPENDENT CHURCH:
First Baptist Church is not a member of a convention. We are an autonomous church in fellowship with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches.

AN EVANGELISTIC CHURCH:
We believe that the main mission of the church is to proclaim an evangelistic message so people can find the reality of salvation in the finished work of Jesus Christ at the cross.

A WORSHIPING CHURCH:
Our morning worship is a blend of traditional and contemporary praise and worship music.  Our emphasis is on worship and ministry, rather than performance.
